Didn’t get much cooking in this weekend, really. It happens sometimes. But in this case, it’s cause we spent the weekend working on some construction.

Our new dining room table!
Technically a wedding present, this has been an ongoing project for some time now. My grandfather-in-law has a carpentry shop in his garage and has been making all kinds of beautiful furniture items for family members for many years now. Since we’ve never had much a dining room set of any sort, it was my wife’s idea that this would be a great project. And of course, she was right. Again.
The table is made from Rock Maple. It started as some giant pieces that were planed down and shaped into the tabletop.

I have my father-in-law, grandfather-in-law, and brother-in-law to thank for most of the work on that phase.
This past weekend, we touched up the pieces for the top and glued them together, put together the construction for the underside, and started a few coats of stain. We also distressed the top a bit for an aged look.

Father-in-law and grandfather-in-law hard at work…

We got a lot done, but there’s still a bit left. A few more coats of stain, some finish, and of course.. you know, legs. But only a few weeks left now and we should be ready to move it in.
I think what’s so cool about this table, is not only that we are going to wind up with such a beautiful result that we will be able to enjoy for years and years and years, but that we’re creating a family heirloom that three generations of a family put together. That’s just awesome.

I can’t wait to move this table into my home and share my first meal on it when it’s finally all completed.
