10 Best Things About Summer

There is currently a contest open! Be sure to check it out here and enter to win. The contest will be closing at 6pm EST on Thursday, July 1st.

Despite the commonly held (and difficult to argue) belief that Memorial Day kicks off the Summer, it is actually today that is the Summer solstice and therefore the *official* start of the Summer. Though, if you live anywhere near where I do, you’ve probably been suffering through some wretched heat for quite awhile already.

The changing of the seasons calls for me once again to change up the fruits and vegetables featured in the design of the blog. Look for new stuff popping up throughout at different times of the day.

Like most people, Summer heat and humidity brings me a not insignificant amount of misery on any given day. But there are a lot of upsides to Summer, too. Here are some of my favorites.

10 – Summer sunset.
Something about the sky at the end of a hot, Summer day, is unlike any other time of the year. Summer sunsets are the best.

9 – Gardening and watching things grow.
Though I’ve always appreciated the way the Summer brings an abundance of life to everything around us, it’s taken on a more significant meaning than ever this year with my new gardening efforts.

8 – Lightning bugs.
The way that lightning bugs light up a dark forest on a Summer evening is beyond amazing. It has always been one of my favorite things of the season.

7 – Summer nights and stars.
On a clear day in the dead of Summer, with a light cool breeze, there’s nothing like lying out under the stars. I have great memories of lying out on a haystack at my grandfather’s farm in Colorado, counting the millions of stars of a western sky.

6 – Summer hours program.
This probably isn’t one everyone can relate to quite as much, but it’s awesome nonetheless. At my work there’s a program through the Summer where you can work longer hours but fewer days. So during the Summer, I get every other Monday off. It’s great.

5 – Swimming pools and bikinis.
This one is pretty much self-explanatory.

4 – Summer rainstorms.
I love a good Summer storm. The anticipation of the roiling clouds, and the utter pelting of a massive downpour.

3 – The beach.
Or at least the idea of it. Amanda and I haven’t been to the beach in the actual Summer in too many years. When we find ourselves at the beach it’s usually off season somewhere far away. Maybe we’ll get to fit a local trip in this year though.

2 – Air conditioning.
I don’t think I could handle the Summer very well at all if I didn’t have some wonderful and welcome respite thanks to modern technology. Nothing like walking in to some blasting air conditioning when you’ve been outside just a little too long.

And my favorite thing about the Summer is…

1 – Longer days and more sunlight.
I love being able to come home from work and still have a couple hours of sunlight left. It makes everything better. The long days of Summer make it much more bearable to have to spend a large portion of my day in an office.
